Mentors
In the context of Greek literature, the understanding of the term mentor becomes alive and enriched. In his work The Odyssey, Homer tells of the adventures of the Greek hero Odysseus. During times of war, Odysseus was called to leave his home for long periods. One of Odysseus' concerns of leaving home was the welfare of his young son Telemachus. As a way of continuing the growth and training of his son, Odysseus entrusted his care over to Mentor, a close friend of the family. In the absence of Odysseus, Mentor was instrumental in Telemachus' development into manhood.
Biblically speaking, mentoring and similar relationships are described throughout the scriptures. The issue of discipleship is probably the most noted. The picture of the Apostle Paul and the young Timothy is yet another example.
As contemporary young adults find themselves more and more independent of their parents and families, the need for continued biblical instruction and godly training is imperative.
The following Mentor couples have been selected to spend time with our young adults. They were particularly sought out due to the godliness observed in their personal walks, their marriages, their families, and their careers:
