When I'm tempted to think that God must be reasonable according to how I reason ... and God is not being fair as I suppose He should ... I need a word from Him.  I can think of no better word than what God told Job in Job 38.  Click on "An Answer To Suffering" on this home page and let God speak to you as He did Job.  It will only take about 4 minutes.  And I'm pretty certain you'll finish with the thought - "thanks, Lord, I needed that!"
